Chinese Wrestling or "Shuai Chiao" in Mandarin (Sut Gao in Cantonese), is
the original root of the Japanese systems of Jujitsu and Judo. The "Sut Gao"
practitioner makes use of sweeps, throws, and low kicks along with his
punching and joint-locking techniques in order to defeat his opponent.
Choy Li Fut, being a very eclectic system, contains numerous "Sut Gao"
techniques. These include - Biu-Jong (an upward fist and forearm strike
which topples the opponent over the practitioner's front leg), Fun-Lan (a
double fist and forearm strike which spreads to the left and right toppling
the opponent over the front leg), Dan-Lan (a single palm-edge and forearm
strike which work similarly to the Fun-Lan technique), Lok-Kiu (a two-hand
grab to the opponent's wrist and elbow twisting and forcing him to the
ground), Tsang-Fu Geuk (Stomping Tiger leg), Sow-Geuk (a sweeping technique)
and the 108 Chin Na techniques passed down to Choy Li Fut Founder Chan Heung
From the Shaolin Temple.
Choy Li Fut students have been very successful in "Shuai Chiao" competitions
through the years. Of course these techniques are just as useful in actual
self-defense situations as they are in the controlled environment of the
Chinese Martial Arts tournament.
